Winter 10/11

Nothing fancy here, this page exists primarily to show off some photos and make it easy for NECN or others to fetch them.

Feb 3

This was after several snow storms in January and early February. From Jan 12 to Feb 2 we had 47" of snow, the largest on Jan 12 (16.6"), Jan 18 (7.8"), Jan 21 (4.2"), Feb 1 (3.8"), and Feb 2 (7.4").

It was a very good season to have purchased a new snowblower!

Feb 27

Feb 25 brought 11.7", Feb 27 another 7.0". About a foot and half.

This is my daughter's car sporting both snowfalls.

This is a rain gauge that can double as a snowfall measuring device. I use it as part of the CoCoRaHS organization. They said it works best close to the ground because the wind is less. I pointed out that their 24" recommendation is too low some seasons.

Like this season. This turns out to be the maximum depth all season. In 2008 my snow depth reached 39", only 5" more.

Apr 3

Despite 4.8" of snow on April Fool's Day, it's hard to keep snow around here in April. Even though we had dewpoints below freezing, breezes and above freezing air temperature melt the snow from above and the high sun angle heats the ground and melts it from below.

It's time to call it the end of 101 days of continuous snow cover.

However, my snowblower pile will hang around for another week or two.

Normally crocuses and other early flowers bloom well before now near the south facing side of the house. Not this year! BTW, a couple of the next few years may be quite cold too.
