Runnings - Baseball Standings on the Run in 2012

Last updated 2012-10-05 08:00 EDT.

This page has MLB's 2012 baseball standings as graphs. These are generated each morning (Eastern Time), after the previous day's scores are reported at www.baseball-reference.com and related pages. A full description of the data is at my original runnings page that I wrote the year after the Red Sox won the World Series from the Yankees. Okay, it was the St. Louis Cardinals, but beating the Yankees after losing the first three games was much more impressive than winning the World Series in four games.

Wildcard races for 2012

The interesting wildcard race in 2011 demonstrated I should include it all years. Last year I simply tracked the best three contenders starting late in the season and I didn't have to change it.

This season I've added code to pick out the top contenders and may tweak it a bit. Instead of watching the top four or five teams, I want to include contenders and other teams that are close in the standings. The graphs show the division leaders with narrow lines and contenders with thick lines. Note that some of the contenders can be well above the leader in another division.

The "sparkish" graphs on my original page were not automated, so I'm sticking with the larger graphs here, at least for the time being.

Thank you and "Wait until next year!"

Another season has ended. I'm surprised and gratified at the small but loyal following this page has, I'm pleased that search engines think "highly" of it. Software Engineers hardly ever express certainty, but I expect all this to be back next year. I did find an interesting open source dynamic graphing package that I might play with during the off season, so "Wait until next year!" Which I haven't heard anyone in Red Sox Nation say yet. Sigh.

Oh - that graphing package is used at http://www.baseballprospectus.com/odds/index.php?dispgroup=div&standings_sort=divpct . I only heard about it around game 161, I'll add a real link to it next year.
